The second generation, from 2013 to 2021, makes up the bulk of the offer. It is the model's most balanced generation and the most affordable today.
The third generation, from 2021, brings a clear step up in finish and the e-Power drivetrain, which works as a series hybrid: the combustion engine only feeds the electric motor, it never drives the wheels. It is entirely electric driving with no need to charge, and it is worth a test drive.
The larger X-Trail offers seven seats and compares usefully if the third row is a genuine need.
On versions with the continuously variable CVT gearbox, it is essential to drive on the open road and under hard acceleration: the engine flaring does not suit everyone and cannot be fixed.
On diesels that have mainly been driven in town, check the particulate filter.
On an e-Power, ask for a battery diagnosis and drive the car on the motorway, where its behaviour differs most from a conventional hybrid.
On versions with a panoramic roof, look for signs of water ingress.
