The generations on the road

The Golf VII, launched in 2012, makes up most of the used offer. It is the model's most balanced generation: proven TSI and TDI engines, careful finish, running costs still under control.

The Golf VIII brings a fully digital interior whose ergonomics have been criticised, particularly the touch-sensitive climate controls. Worth trying before you decide, because it divides opinion.

The Golf VI remains within reach on tight budgets, with simple mechanicals but dated equipment.

What to check

On a DSG dual-clutch, the gearbox oil change specified at intervals is the central point: skipping it is the most frequent cause of failure on these transmissions. The invoice should be in the book.

Drive the DSG in slow manoeuvres, parallel parking and hill starts, where faults show up first.
